This week, students focused on cause and effect while reading about Explorers and their expeditions. How did Europeans effect Native Americans by coming to the New World? Good ways? Bad ways? Ask your child to tell you about beaver furs!
Alongside learning about the Native American and European interactions, students are collaborating in groups to create a one of kind carrying item inspired by an Explorer we learned about. Just as the Explorers only carried necessary items for their expedition, we discussed what special items we need when we go on field trips (modern day expeditions). This carrying item will be helpful to teachers on field trips because it will carry all the necessary items in one bag instead of four bags. Ask the students to demonstrate what their teacher looks like on a field trip with four bags! If you are a parent with a marketing background, look out for an email for volunteering. We will need an expert very soon. :)
During ELA, our stations have really taken off. Students are in routine and are reading, writing, learning a new skill, and investigating almost every day. The majority of the station material is related to our driving question, "What can we learn from interactions of Native American and European cultures to shape positive views in our community?" that students are working toward answering through the knowledge gained in our stations.
We started a new module in math, Module 3. Yes, we skipped Module 2 for the moment, but will be incorporating the 5 day Module 2 into our curriculum soon. Module 3 uses the students background knowledge of Multiplication and Division facts to solve problems so any practice at home will be beneficial.
In Science, students have been working on STEM activities within their given groups. After completing the STEM activity with their group, our students then become the teachers to Mrs. Wilde's 1st graders, guiding them through the activity. Our students are able to use their own group's reflection to help their STEM Buddies make progress by working together to complete the activity. The above picture is the latest Stem Buddy activity, "Can you build a bridge one foot wide out of popsicle sticks that hold a dictionary?"
Great minds work well together!

Using our Driving Question, "What can we learn from interactions of Native American and European cultures to shape positive views in our community?", students are gaining knowledge on how the Native Americans lived using their land. We used our main idea skill and dissected a document, "The Great Law of Peace" to find out how the Iroquois government originated. Along with main idea, students are almost finished investigating NY Geography and the location of the 6 Nations. Next week, we will be working on our Need to Knows.
Students are almost finished with Module 1 on Place Value and will be tested on this information this Tuesday. Study Guides went home last week and are due this Monday.
I am so proud of my class for all the positive choices that are being made everyday. This upcoming week is Red Ribbon Week to promote making all these good choices. Check the Haldane web site to see what the week's events are.

Last week, our students were dressed to impress with dresses, suits, ties, and shiny shoes. Each student had an opportunity to highlight important skills, education, and experience to help them obtain a job in 4th grade. If the students don't get picked for a job, there will be a whole new string of interviews next trimester.
In Social Studies, we are reading about the Native Americans to help us with our new Driving Question, "What can we learn from interactions of Native American and European cultures to shape positive views in our community?". Students are also investigating NY geography and Native American tribes.

The professional, job seekers for 4H-N have finished their resume and cover letters and are excited about applying to their very first school job. Interviews will take place this upcoming week on Thursday and Friday. We plan to practice formal interview etiquette in preparation for student interviews. Students will be applying for either Eco Club, Student Ambassador, Mentor Club, or Helping Hands. What happens if I don't get a job? Well, not to worry. Each Trimester, students will have a chance to update their resume and cover letter to highlight their positive qualities and behavior gained this past trimester. Let the interviews begin!
In math, students were tested on Module 1, Place Value midway. This material will be reviewed in our math stations as well as throughout the year. The next few lessons tie in with Place Value and use Addition and Subtraction to solve problems.
